St. Patrick’s Day at BJ’s Brewhose

Green was the color of the day.   The table was abuzz with conversation.   Everyone seemed to have a great time!  Thirteen fellow Singletarians and one former Singletarian enjoyed the ambiance of BJ’s along with green and white cup cakes served by Patti Foremaster and Carrot Cake served by Eileen Weeks.  A special welcome to Ofelia Quinn who works 2 jobs but spent her day off with her fellow Singletarians – kudos.

Super Bowl Sunday Lll – Philadelphia Eagles vs. New England Patriots

Marcia Augat, President,  was our gracious host for a Super Bowl Potluck  at her home.  Several fellow Singletarians  stayed and cheered for their favorite team – the Philadelphia Eagles and  local Tucsonan, Nick Foles, an ex University of Arizona quarterback.  Nick Foles was named MVP of Super Bowl LII after 4 total touchdowns.  Some members played Mexican Train during the game.

Carole Kidd was our gracious host for a 90 minute tour of the Steward Observatory Richard F. Caris Mirror Lab.   Kevin Law was our tour guide.  The  Lab had its beginning around 1980 with a backyard experiment by Dr. Roger Angel, the lab’s founder and scientific director.  By 1985, with financial support primarily from the US Air Force, the National Science Foundation and the University of Arizona, Roger Angel  and a talented Mirror Lab team  moved to the current facility under the east wing of the UA football stadium.   A large, rotating furnace was built and a series of mirrors as big as 3.5 meters in diameter were successfully cast.  An actual mirror for the Magellan Telescope was in the oven on our tour date and this only occurs about once every two years! The largest telescope mirrors in the world are manufactured right here in Tucson under our U of A football stadium.  The group proceeded to Bj’s Brewhouse on Broadway for lunch at noon.  A great time was had by all and a good time to continue our conversation about the Mirro Lab.

Everyone had a great time and I wish to extend a special thank you to Kevin Law, Judith Law and Carole Kidd in coordinating this special and educational Tucson Singletarian activity.
